AI takes to the high seas

Just a few days ago, news emerged of the successful launch of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship from Plymouth, piloted by IBM-designed artificial intelligence and powered by solar photovoltaics. The crewless ship is now embarking on sea trials before it will set sail across the Atlantic following a similar route to the original Mayflower back in 1620. The ship is packed full of technology, including the materials from which it is constructed and the sensors it will use to avoid obstacles and undertake scientific environmental research en-route. The project is led by marine research organisation Promare, supported by IBM and a global consortium of partners.
