Keynote Science and technology – the goal-driven golem We have achieved amazing technological developments through scientific discovery. But there is a real danger if we try to direct scientific study purely with practical applications in mind. All the evidence is that the best breakthroughs come when we let scientists explore freely. Brian Clegg is the author of numerous popular science books, with topics ranging from infinity to 'how to build a time machine.' He has also written regular columns, features and reviews for numerous magazines and newspapers, including Nature, BBC History, The Times, The Observer, The Wall Street Journal and Physics World. He has given sell-out lectures at the Royal Institution in London and has spoken at various festivals and events including the Cheltenham Festival of Science. He has also contributed to radio and TV programmes, and recently appeared with the Robert Peston teaching him quantum theory and took part in the University Challenge Christmas Special. Brian has a degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge. @brianclegg |
