2016 The Business of Innovating

Themed Symposium

Friday 7th October 2016 (all day)

Malvern Theatres, WR14 3HB

Creativity and business acumen don't always go hand-in-hand, but the UK's knowledge-based economy needs brave entrepreneurs to think out-of-the-box and then leap out of their comfort zone. Come to meet others who have done it and organisations that can help you to succeed.

A day devoted to instilling innovation in the heart of your business. Whether you needed to protect intellectual property, secure funding, start a new venture, grow an existing enterprise or expand overseas, this session focused on how to think creatively about your business operations and included case studies and an elevator pitching session.

The symposium was free for all to attend.

Innovation Economies: A UK Perspective

We live, work and play in an innovation economy and as a result our future prosperity is now dependent on our ability to innovate, to continuously deliver better outcomes for consumers, businesses and society. Where do the opportunities for innovation come from and how do they differ in their journeys from concept to commercialisation? Why are our innovation economies in a constant state of change and what are the opportunities and challenges, which emerge from a better understanding of how technologies evolve? Innovate UK has a unique perspective of the innovation landscape and this presentation will draw on those insights, to examine the business of innovating.

Kevin Baughan, Chief Development Officer at Innovate UK

Kevin has a 35-year track record in the telecommunications industry including roles with British Telecom, Nortel Networks and Virgin Media, where most recently he was Director of Technical Strategy and Wireless. He played a leadership role in the technical evolution of Virgin Media and its predecessor companies, championing innovations spanning high-speed broadband, TV, Wi-Fi, cellular infrastructure and services driven by “big data”. Previously Kevin co-founded a pioneering start-up which focused on novel network technologies and worked with the US Airforce research labs. From 1995 to 2008 Kevin was an honorary professor at the University of Birmingham.

Intellectual Property: The Best Kept Secret in Business Strategy

A special triple-bill of practical advice for SMEs and business owners to leverage their IP and create a competitive advantage for their brands, ideas and innovations. This is an opportunity to hear from local experts about real-life business case studies which could apply to your own situation. Hear about the value of protecting your IP and how to go about it successfully as well as how to defend it when required. Also, learn about making the best use of government R&D tax reliefs to reduce the overall development costs of new processes, products and services.

Jim Robertson, Partner, Patent Attorney at Wynne Jones IP

Jim helps his clients to successfully obtain granted patents protecting their technologies, undertaking due diligence on commercial transactions, and acting against third parties on validity and infringement matters. He works closely with patent examiners, patent offices and foreign agents to ease patent applications through the prosecution and granting process as efficiently as possible. Jim has an MA in Natural Sciences (molecular and cellular biology), and his primary technical fields are in the life sciences - biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and medical devices. He is also a member of the CIPA life sciences committee. Over the years, he has gained a wealth of non-biotech experience, particularly in mechanical and civil engineering, food packaging, cleantech, fuel cells, aeronautics, and oil & gas.

Paul Gordon, Partner at Willans LLP solicitors

Paul is an experienced litigator who regularly handles intellectual property disputes including trademark, design rights and patent cases and has advised on matters involving passing off, parallel imports, and confidentiality issues in relation to both IP and research and development. He has handled a range of complex High Court cases and has a high success rate with cases referred to mediation, achieving advantageous settlements for his clients. Paul has been practising intellectual property litigation for over ten years, having previously worked for various London law firms prior to joining Willans in 2006. One of his most famous cases in recent years is the win for a Gloucestershire telecommunications company in a high profile trade mark case against national giant, YouView TV Ltd, involving the YouView TV set top box. This litigation made national and international headlines.

James Geary, Head of Corporate Tax at Randall & Payne

James is a specialist in Research & Development Tax Relief, Patent Box and Capital Allowances. He has saved nearly £3 million for his clients from R&D Tax Relief in the last two years.  He is also involved with the Chartered Institute of Taxation and regularly feeds into government consultations on changes in tax policy.

Dr George Windsor, Senior Policy Researcher at Nesta

Bringing Ideas to Life

The world is converging and the barriers between traditional formats are blurring. Technology is changing our daily lives and the way we interact with the things that surround us. We are seeing new behaviours, attitudes and expectations. The relationship between brands, manufacturers, retailers and their target audiences is changing. There is a need to look at, articulate and tell stories differently when creating and designing new products and experiences.

Mike Webster, Director of TheOverworld

Mike is an award-winning industrial designer and director of TheOverworld, a creative consultancy specialising in the interaction between people, technology and culture. He works with clients designing the next ‘big thing’, be that a new product or service for next year or an innovation pipeline and future concepts for the next ten. He provides creative and strategic direction throughout the design and innovation process, from identifying opportunities at the front-end to the creation and development of unique yet relevant solutions and their implementation at the back-end. He was formerly Associate Design Director at Seymourpowell.

Pitching for Business Success

Entrepreneurs need to constantly pitch their business, whether it is for finance, sales or to take on quality new hires. Investors, customers and prospective employees need to be enthused by the business and the opportunity it presents. Getting the message across in a short time, for example during the time it takes for the elevator to reach the C-suite is paramount. This presentation will provide some ideas on how to pitch successfully, what investors might particularly be looking for and how to get what you need to make a business successful.
